As home inspectors, we see a lot of household appliances. This week while our daughter was visiting she asked how long it had been since we’d cleaned our front-loading washing machines. My wife and I had to admit that it had been a very long time. While front-loading machines are now extremely common because they’re efficient, stylish, and great for saving water, they can also harbor mold, mildew, and unpleasant odors if not maintained properly. Surprisingly, our machine was harboring all of these. Cleaning your front-loading washing machine is essential to ensure it runs efficiently and remains clean, but we had gotten lazy in cleaning ours. So we went to work to clean it immediately!
Why Clean Your Front-Loading Washing Machine?
Front-loading washing machines are prone to mold and mildew because they use less water and have a tighter seal than top loaders. The design keeps the door gasket and detergent drawer damp, creating an ideal environment for mold growth. Regular cleaning helps. In fact, manufacturers recommend you clean it at least twice a year, more frequently if you have furry animals in your home.
Tools and Materials You’ll Need:
– White vinegar
– Baking soda
– Microfiber cloth or soft sponge
– Old toothbrush
– Mild detergent
– Clean, dry towels
Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide
1. Clean the Door Seal
Start by inspecting the gasket. Pull back the rubber door seal (gasket) and look for any debris, hair, or mold. Wipe it down with a damp cloth. Next, disinfect by mixing equal parts white vinegar and water. Use a cloth soaked in this solution to wipe around the gasket, paying special attention to any visible mold or residue. Now dry thoroughly. Use a dry towel to wipe the gasket dry. This significantly helps to prevent moisture buildup.
2. Clean the Drum
Run a cleaning cycle by pouring two cups of white vinegar into the detergent dispenser. Run the washing machine on the hottest cycle with no clothes inside. The vinegar helps dissolve soap scum and mineral deposits. Now add baking soda after the vinegar cycle. Sprinkle half a cup of baking soda directly into the drum. Run another hot cycle. Baking soda will neutralize odors and further clean the drum.
3. Clean the Detergent Drawer
Also, take out the detergent drawer completely. Soak it in warm, soapy water for 15-20 minutes. Scrub and rinse using an old toothbrush to scrub away any detergent residue and mold. Rinse thoroughly and dry before reinserting.
4. Clean the Filter
The filter is usually located at the bottom front of the machine, but you may have to consult your washing machine’s manual to find it, Admittedly we had never cleaned ours out and it was gross when we removed it. To remove and clean place a towel or shallow pan under the filter to catch any water. Remove the filter and clean it under running water, using a brush if needed. Replace the filter securely. You’ll also want to drain the hose in that same location.
5. Final Wipe Down
Lastly, wipe down the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Following each wash, leave the door open to allow the interior to dry out. This prevents mold and mildew buildup.
In conclusion, by following these steps, you can keep your front-loading washing machine running efficiently and your laundry smelling fresh. Regular maintenance not only extends the life of your machine but also ensures your clothes are clean and smell good. Until next time, happy cleaning! -CHUCK
