1. Ensure Proper Grading Around Your Home

The ground around your home should slope away from the foundation. This simple but effective step can help direct rainwater away from your basement walls. Ideally, the soil should slope down about six inches over the first ten feet. This ensures that water doesn’t pool near your foundation and seep into your basement.

2. Clean and Maintain Your Gutters and Downspouts

Your gutters and downspouts play a crucial role in managing rainwater.  There are a lot of times we get on a ladder to inspect the roof and notice clogged gutters. Make sure they are clean and free of debris. Downspouts should extend at least five feet away from your house to direct the water well away from the foundation. If needed, use downspout extensions to achieve this.

3. Install a Sump Pump with Battery Backup

A sump pump is an invaluable tool in keeping your basement dry. It collects and pumps out water that accumulates in a sump basin, typically located in the basement’s lowest point. Make sure your sump pump is in good working condition. Additionally, you should consider a battery backup system to ensure it operates during power outages.

4. Inspect and Repair Foundation Cracks
