As we mentioned in our last blog, the rainy season can bring on certain problems with water in the basement. We see it all the time during our home inspections. There are things you can do in your home to prevent this problem and keep your basement dry. Here’s Part 2. If you missed Part 1 you can read it here.
5. Install Window Well Covers
If your basement has windows below ground level, installing window well covers can help prevent water from entering through these openings. Window well covers keep rain and debris out while allowing light to filter into the basement.

6. Check Your Landscaping
Be mindful of how your landscaping affects water flow around your home. Avoid planting shrubs or trees too close to the foundation, as their roots can disrupt the soil and create pathways for water to enter your basement. Specifically, opt for plants that require less water and help absorb excess moisture.

7. Consider Waterproofing Treatment
For an added layer of protection, consider applying waterproofing treatments to your basement walls and floors. These products can help create a barrier that prevents water from penetrating your basement. Surprisingly, there are various options available, from sealants to more extensive professional waterproofing systems.
8. Regularly Test Your Drainage Systems
Make sure that any drainage systems, like French drains, are functioning correctly. For example, they can become filled with silt, sediment, and other debris, causing water to overflow or even backflow from the pipes and into the house. Periodically test these systems by running water through them to make sure they are effectively directing water away from your home. If you are having persistent problems with the drainage systems or if you are unsure of their proper functioning, it is recommended to call a professional.
To sum it up, keeping your basement dry during the rainy season doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By following these tips and staying vigilant, you can protect your home from water damage and enjoy a dry basement year-round.
