As a home inspector, we always take a peak at the dishwasher. While some shine like new, others harbor hidden grime that can impact performance and even the lifespan of the appliance. Admittedly, cleaning the dishwasher is not at the top of my priority list. In fact, I (Chuck) usually leave that to my wife! But recently our son-in-law came for a visit, and he decided this kitchen appliance needed a thorough cleaning. My wife was thrilled!
With a little TLC, you can keep your dishwasher sparkling and ensure it delivers spotless dishes for years to come. Our 18 year old dishwasher looks like new after its thorough cleaning.
Why Clean Your Dishwasher?

Here’s why regular cleaning is important:
- Improved Performance: A clean dishwasher sprays water more effectively, leading to better cleaning and less rewashing.
- Reduced Odors: Food particles trapped inside can cause unpleasant smells. Regular cleaning keeps it fresh.
- Prevents Drain Clogs: Food scraps and grease can build up in the filter and drain, leading to clogs and potential leaks.
- Extends Lifespan: A well-maintained dishwasher will last longer and require fewer repairs.

Step-by-Step Dishwasher Cleaning Guide
We recommend this routinely be done every 1-3 months (let’s be realistic here).
1. Empty the Dishwasher
Remove any dishes or utensils from the inside.

2. Clean the Filter
Consult your owner’s manual to locate the filter. Most are removable and can be cleaned and rinsed with warm water.
3. Wipe Down the Interior
Use a damp cloth with warm, soapy water to wipe down the interior walls, including the spray arms. Pay attention to areas where food particles may accumulate.
4. Run a Cleaning Cycle
Many dishwashers have a designated cleaning cycle. If not, use a dishwasher cleaner according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Better yet, fill a one or two cup glass measuring cup with white vinegar (placed on the top shelf) and run a cycle. You can even add some baking soda.
Keeping it Fresh:
- Avoid Pre-Rinsing: Modern dishwashers are designed to handle light food residue. Pre-rinsing can be a waste of water.
- Scrape, Don’t Rinse: Scrape off large food particles before loading it.
- Leave the Door Open: After a cycle, leave the door slightly ajar to allow moisture to escape and prevent mold growth.
By following these simple steps, you can ensure your dishwasher remains a reliable cleaning companion in your kitchen.
