Heading to Warmer Temperatures This Winter?

We know. We know.  The weather outside will get frightful (at least here in Iowa), and you’re having visions of warm temperatures.  Sandy beaches. Ocean waves. Desert cactus. Or maybe your plans are already in place, and you plan to leave for a few weeks or even a few months.  Great idea! We’ve seen firsthand the problems that can arise when homeowners head south for the winter without properly preparing their homes. So what’s a midwestern homeowner to do while you’re away in order to take precautions against damage?

Protect your Plumbing Systems

One of the most critical steps is to protect your plumbing system. Frozen pipes can burst, causing extensive water damage. To prevent this, make sure to disconnect garden hoses, insulate exposed pipes, and consider keeping your thermostat set to at least 55 degrees.  (Chuck prefers to keep his thermostat at around 62-65.) Additionally, we think it’s a great idea to have someone check on your house periodically to ensure the heat is working and no leaks have developed. Don’t have anyone to do that for you? You might check with our office. We have a few folks we know who for a small fee can check in on your home if it’s in the Des Moines area.Ice dams in winter

Another area to focus on is the exterior of your home. Clear your gutters to prevent ice dams from forming, which can lead to roof leaks. Trim any overhanging tree branches that could break under the weight of snow or ice and damage your home.

Finally, secure your home by locking all windows and doors, and consider installing a security system for added protection. By taking these precautions, you can enjoy your winter getaway knowing your home is safe and sound.

For us, being a home inspector is more than just a job; it’s a passion. We love what we do. We love helping you, our homeowners, feel confident about your home whether they’re present or traveling. Of course, don’t hesitate to contact our office if you have questions.
